"Halloween Month" Begins

Image
There was this Batman kids book I read years ago in which Robin and Batgirl turn up to a Halloween party in full costume and go by Tim and Barbara and it doesn't blow their cover because, after all, it's a Halloween party. There are like six people dressed as Robin there. I think that's where this came from. I never understood why the big bad guy wanted world control. I get a desire for control in your own life, but Leia was right when she said, "The more you tighten your grip, the more planets will slip right through your fingers." The only effect being in total control could have is to make you feel completely powerless (or wind up getting taken down in a military coup or invaded), going by my own experiences with being left in charge of my siblings while Mom and Dad run errands. Technically I have parental authority then, but in reality, I know that no one's going to listen to me and the only real effect that "authority" has is t...

The End of September 2019

Image
YESSS! I am getting closer and closer to dispensing with all this backlog! It's piled up to April 2020. That means I have 6 months or so left, as I wrote almost nothing during November 2019. Since starting this blog in April 2020, I have put up the comics I wrote November 2018 - September 2019, in a little less than four months. I should easily hit my deadline of getting all my comics up by December 2020. I plan to begin writing in real time again come the Christmas Season this year - maybe, if we're lucky, in mid November. All depends how long the comics I have take to put up, and when the ideas begin to flow again. Fingers crossed! OK, here's an actual comic, now that you've slogged through that emotional editorial: Ah, yes. The last few comics of September were inspired by Rosh Hashanah. (Spelled it right on the first try. What are the odds?) I saw it noted on my wall calendar and decided Ava needed a chance to do something both funny and non soul cru...

Cigarrette ads and Skullcaps. . .

Image
. . . which clearly have nothing to do with each other, although I can just see Esther taking up a job in some of the world's least ethical advertising. The truth is that these two comics just didn't seem to fit into any other category and I wanted to put them up together. Face it, they're both so bizarre they were made for each other. This will all make sense in a moment. Huh. Now that I think about it, that's not so bizarre. . . but now you know what the cigarette was. And here's the skullcap. Although that name sounds really weird to me now. . . In this one, you can pretty much replace Esther with me and Ava with me and then it actually happened. I was trying to crochet a yarmulke, and, let's just say I'm no expert on crocheting hats of any sort and, really, I only had a vague idea of what a yarmulke is supposed to look like. So I ended up with a cowboy hat, bright green, the perfect size for an 18" doll. I still have it s...

A Truly Terrible Day

Image
Guess who actually ate this stuff. IF you said Anne and no one else, you are correct. Even Rachel just took a few bites, then turned to Ava and said, "Which hamburger joint should we hit tonight?" I originally tried to cast Ava as a little Pollyanna because, well, she's on the Light side, isn't she? Wouldn't that make here at least a little optimistic? Ava's a hardcore cynic. Anne is the optimist. It's hilarious. This is how putting it in perspective is supposed to work. Does it ever really, though?

A Typical Day in the Life of Anne Palpatine

Image
830 AM. Anne wakes up, drags herself downstairs, and tries to do her homework, but she can't read her own handwriting. 1205 PM. Anne comes home for lunch after a hard morning spent distrupting the class and copying over Ava's shoulder, and Esther decides to announce her newfound (or not) suicidal tendencies. 508 PM. Anne and Ava both retire home for the night (In Ava's case, this is only typical on Fridays, when the Jewish Sabbath begins at sundown). Anne steps on Doomdreg's tail on accident and he chases her through the house while Ava holds a shouted conversation with her father over the phone. Then Ava goes to bed and Anne goes to the emergency room; the end of a typical day.

Relationship Struggles

Image
No explanation needed. Anne and Ava have a very weird relationship. They're a Jedi and a Sith, so there's a lot of sentiment but absolutely no trust. And Anne will defend Ava from anyone and anything. . . even as she vampirized Ava's life shamelessly herself.

"Bizarre Negative" Jokes

Image
A "bizarre negative" is where the punchline is good because no one expected Anne (or Ava) to say that , of all things. Yes. Yes, yes, yes, and yes. I think I wrote this at 3 AM. Or maybe 3 P M. I don't have a videographic memory.
